This PCOS forum website is dedicated to women with PCOS. PCOS is an abbreviation for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. PCOS is a condition in which there are many small cysts in the ovaries, which can affect a woman's ability to get pregnant. The name of the condition comes from the appearance of the ovaries in most, but not all, women with the disorder — enlarged and containing numerous small cysts located along the outer edge of each ovary (polycystic appearance). Between 1 in 10 and 1 in 20 women of childbearing age has PCOS. As many as 5 million women in the United States may be affected. It can occur in girls as young as 11 years old.
